So this means that (the millions of) individuals like me (without their own domain name / email address) who use Yahoo mail can no longer reliably send emails via the tha Yahoo SMTP servers even if we are properly authenticated by the server at the time of sending?
This behavior you've noticed is related to Yahoo's DMARC policy which was put in place to combat the practice of "spoofing" email addresses. That's where pretends they send an email from your address and our server, but it actually is coming from somewhere else entirely, and as you can imagine it's a major security issue. This isn't related to the actual sending of the email through the SMTP server.
