valt e-mail automatisch onder het publieke domein? ... Er zijn een aantal Law and Order-afleveringen geweest waarin advocaten van de openbare aanklager of de verdediging naar computerbeveiligingsdeskundigen gingen en e-mails ophaalden (om de schuld of onschuld van een bepaalde partij te bewijzen). Deze e-mails werden niet opgehaald van persoonlijke computers (die de e-mails verstuurden en/of ontvingen), maar ze werden als het ware teruggevonden in het publieke domein.

Uit deze afleveringen lijkt het erop dat als een e-mail eenmaal is verzonden in het publieke domein (zonder dat deze is versleuteld), deze kan worden teruggevonden/ontdekt en gelezen door dergelijke experts. Is dit waar? Wanneer een e-mail in het publieke domein wordt verzonden, is het dan echt iets dat "publiek" is geworden?

Ja, als de mail is verzonden en nog ergens op een server staat, dan kan hij gemakkelijk worden bekeken.

Ja, het is als een "ansichtkaart" als het onderweg is en de Britse Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 maakt het mogelijk om een "black box" te installeren in het datacentrum van een ISP om al het verkeer te kopiëren waarvan de veiligheidsdiensten vinden dat het "interessant" is.

In theorie zou dit kunnen betekenen dat alle e-mail van/naar een specifieke gebruiker gekopieerd zou kunnen worden naar een overheidsinstantie om daar gearchiveerd te worden. Een ISP die ik gebruik had noodplannen om hun mailservers naar het buitenland te verplaatsen als ze ooit een of andere "black box" moesten installeren, en de managing director (voorheen hun meest senior systeembeheerder) zei dat gebruikers konden vragen of er al iets was geïnstalleerd, en terwijl ze het antwoord "nee, nog niets" kregen, zou dat precies zijn wat het betekende, zodra er iets was geïnstalleerd, zou de ISP niet in staat zijn om te antwoorden (niet toegestaan!) dus dat zou een aanwijzing zijn!

Hoe dan ook, het grootste probleem dat ik zie is dat één persoon tientallen verschillende mailadressen kan hebben. Ik heb minstens 30 verschillende domeinen / websites (*) / mailaccounts. Sommige hebben mail opgeslagen in het VK, sommige in de VS, sommige buiten die landen. Welk mailadres ik gebruik bepaalt allerlei dingen... sommige mailaccounts controleren anderen op nieuwe mail (en verwijderen die van de oorspronkelijke server). Sommige mailadressen sturen een bericht naar mijn mobiele telefoon...

Ik ben nauwelijks een genie en weet dat *als ze zouden willen* ze waarschijnlijk om me heen zouden kunnen draaien om alle berichten te vinden, maar het zou veel ingewikkelder kunnen zijn

Als ik betrokken zou zijn bij misdaad of terrorisme, zou ik waarschijnlijk versleuteling en veel extra opties gebruiken om het eenvoudig traceren van berichten te voorkomen.

Heck, het kan voor mij een puzzel zijn om erachter te komen waarom een bericht niet in een mailbox is beland waar ik het verwachtte, dus het zou "hen" een vrolijke dans kunnen geven om te achterhalen wat er met een bericht is gebeurd 🙂

(*) Ik heb minstens een half dozijn web "reseller" accounts, elk kan tientallen domeinen bevatten (sommige van mij, de meeste zijn van klanten)

Open yahoo inbox then Upper right corner, click OPTIONS then mail options and then in the left navigation pane see pop and forwarding then set up edit and pop & forwarding, then in the top sections web and pop access then click pop and settings, check out your yahoo incoming and outgoing mail server that will be used when you are going to set your mail in outlook express.

server rejected sender’s email address? … When I attempt to send email from my laptop running Windows Live Mail, the following error occurs:
“Message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender’s email address. The sender’s email address was (my email address)”. The server error listed is 530 (0x800CCC78) – authentication required. I’m attempting to setup email from yahoo as a feed through Windows Live Mail. You’re using the wrong server settings. You need to upgrade to Yahoo Mail Plus and use these settings:

Incoming mail server settings

POP server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL
Port: 995

Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings

SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL
Port: 465

Use authentication

Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the “@domain.com”, for example, “jo.bloggs”)

I have tried some, and found Kerio Connect the best up to my search.
tried some more like smarter mail, mail enable, IMail but found those use-less (No pop3 download support, No SMTP relay sends,…..) .

I was actually in a similar spot a little over a year ago as my company IT manager left and our mail was in bad shape running Eudora worldmail from I think the 90's. I was tasked with finding the best mail server for our budget so this immediately removed Microsoft Exchange from it.

We ended going the route Chris D mentions but I think he said it right when saying skillset and preferences because this setup really takes a lot of time and experience to get right and we had a ton of problems because no one was a true Linux admin so our search went on and we tested smartermail (didnt like it at all), then axigen (not for us) and then settled on two products to bake off against each other, Kerio which you mention and IceWarp so I will give you the results and hopefully it might help you.

We liked this product a lot as it seemed to have everything we wanted and in our testing seemed to be pretty solid, we discovered a few minor bugs but nothing that would drastically change our opinion. It has full support for all mail protocols, a decent web interface, mobile support (which is a growing need for us and it was FREE!!) and a Outlook plugin. We were impressed to say the least with almost everything except that during our testing they released a statement stating ActiveSync would no longer be free and they also had a dust up with customers on what seemed to be a drastic switch in their support model so this made us pause and look at IceWarp more seriously.

We had never heard of them but one of the other engineers recommended them from use at a past company. When looking at their feature set they too had everything we needed and actually more as we were able to use their integrated archiving feature and remove our old archive appliance and the product was very easy for us to administer and install so that was a huge bonus for our small IT staff. They had one feature that finally put it over the top for us as our choice, they call it SmartAttach, the ability to send large attachments through email, this has cut our storage cost by almost half so the higher ups love that.

All in all Kerio was good but we felt IceWarp just had a few more features and was just as nice in the interfaces and ease of use. The one knock on IceWarp was documentation, I feel this could have been a little better by including more examples for newbies like me but their support worked with me on anything I needed and got me going quickly so I forgive the docs.

Wow — this one's a toughie! I've searched and searched, and I keep coming up with references to a secondary error code of 320 instead of 298, which is the only one that Yahoo publishes a help page for:

I found a list of the meanings of the primary SMTP error codes here (this is page 2 of it):

which gives the meaning of 554 as :

554 – The transaction failed. Blame it on the weather.

(!!!???) That suggests it's a catchall code for errors that don't fit the other categories. Yahoo has evidently defined these errors for its own benefit and supplies the definitions in the secondary codes (the 298 in your case), but if they've published them publicly I haven't been able to find them.

Are the attachments larger than the Yahoo limit of 25 megabytes? If so, that's probably what it means. The 554 error code does relate to the data of the message itself in some way according to the standards document and the link I provided below for us communications geeks.

If not, I can only suggest you go to whatever help page is provided on your gear symbol's drop-down menu (top right corner of mail page) and see if you can get a number to call Yahoo and ask for help.

Is your reply encoded in an HTML attachment? Yahoo has a limit of 25 MB for attachments.
Do you reply to many people at the same time? Yahoo has an unpublished limit on the number of addresses an email can be sent to.

If it's not anything like this, I think you need to get in touch with a Yahoo tech — this question is beyond the capabilities of those of us on the forum (unless there are Yahoo stealth techs on here, which I suspect there are — one of them slipped and used the word "us" in a reply once). Even then, as a former computer programmer in the communications field, I'd probably need to see the full data in HEX or HTML CODE, not the finished product, in order to figure this one out.

Go to the Help page from the drop-down menu on the gear symbol and call or send a written description of your problem to Yahoo.

Yahoo does not allow to POP emails or configure account in outlook with free email address. First thing, is your account is Yahoo Plus ( Paid Account) than you can configure your account in outlook or any other mail client, the mail server information you are providing is invalid. if you are paid account than follow these steps else you have to upgrade your email account to plus.

Click on Options > POP & Forwarding > Set up or edit POP & Forwarding > View POP Settings > HERE PAGE WILL POP UP and Contains the information regarding configuration

To do that I need Yahoo's SMTP Server name, SMTP Port number, and if the authentication is plain, plain TLS, or NTLM. I also need a username and password if that is applicable.

There are two sets of settings for Yahoo email. The first assumes that you are allowed POP3 access on the FREE accounts. Many of us have to use the PAID Yahoo Mail Plus accounts in order to access POP3 facilities, in which case the second set of settings would apply.

1) Yahoo! Mail Settings (if allowed)

Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) – pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)
Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) – smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)

2) Yahoo! Mail Plus email server settings
